BackArts & Culture » [Illustrations] Saigon's Quaint Chaos in Nguyen Hoang Huy's Black-and-White Sketches

Nguyen Hoang Huy's simple ink-and-paper sketches, which can be found on his Behance page, capture the rough charms of Saigon's cramped dwellings and riverways.

Huy is a Saigon-based furniture designer by trade. His work includes creating chairs, tables and desks. He says he is "committed to delivering to an appropriate and functional solution with a simple and direct design language." The straight-forward approach is reflected in his sketches of Saigon which require no embellishment or flair to reveal the city's intriguing architecture and scenery.

Using a multitude of quick ink strokes to reveal intersecting angles interspersed with white space, the artist presents Saigon's cluttered riverside dwellings. His illustrations also capture the many interesting, natural lines created by balconies, fences, electric wires and alleyways in small hems. Many of his scenes involve the small traditional boats that operate on the Saigon River. The rustic wooden watercraft are juxtaposed by the city's modern buildings including Bitexco Tower, which allows them to comment on the rapidity of change experienced by the city.
