In a refreshing alternative to stories about crazy things wealthy Vietnamese spend their money on, Michael Barrs, a teacher at The American School of Vietnam, promised his students that if they raised $5,000 for Heartbeat Vietnam, they could choose his hairstyle.
Barrs’ students were able to raise $6,000 by selling t-shirts, pizzas and using other fund-raising strategies.
After meeting their goal, Barrs stuck to his word and his students decided on a sweet mohawk.
The charity, run by VinaCapital, funds heart operations for disadvantaged Vietnamese children.
Beyond this fun twist on philanthropy, it is great to see that there are teachers like Barrs who promote social education. His students learned not only how to work towards a goal, but also the value in supporting a worthwhile cause.
