Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport is seeking VND235.95 trillion (US$10.58 billion) for the completion of a cross-country highway that would run from Hanoi to Can Tho.
The 1,814-kilometer expressway, approved by former Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in 2010, is expected to reach “basic completion” by 2020, reports Tuoi Tre.
Several sections of the road are already in use around the country, totaling 171 kilometers of highway, while an additional 302 kilometers are currently under construction.
At a Ministry of Transport meeting last week, officials evaluated the project’s current investment and remaining costs. Moving forward, the Vietnamese government will mobilize 49% of the remaining funds from the private sector; the other 51% will come from the national budget as well as overseas development assistance.
Though Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung, who chaired last week’s meeting, pushed for the highway’s completion by 2020, ministry officials expect to finish construction on the road by 2023.
Officials put the expressway’s total price tag at VND341.32 trillion (US$15.3 billion).
