'Flappy Bird' Isn't the Only Hit App Made in Vietnam

Our favorite TechinAsia writer, Anh Minh Do, recently published a guest post on Mashable, telling the world that there’s more to Vietnam’s app ecosystem than just Flappy Bird.

Do points to Saigon based mobile app developer, Prime Circa, as a particularly strong player in the productivity space, releasing 2 extremely popular offerings, NotesPlus and INKredible for iOS and Android.

NotesPlus has racked up over 6 million downloads at $9.99 a piece over the last 2 years, and INKredible “topped the US App Store in the productivity section and racked up over one million downloads in one month.”

Do met up with the  Prime Circa team over beers and found a few surprises:

“When I first emailed the app developers, I was eager to see the office of what I assumed to be a large team, but it turns out there's less than a dozen of them. On top of this, even though they have an office, they all prefer to work from home or at their leisure.”

The company desires to expand but is handcuffed by Vietnam’s notoriously lacking IT human resources:

“Of 600 applications that they got through online recruitment sites in Vietnam, only two were picked to join the crew. That's because there's just not enough A-layers out there to join startups.”

While Vietnam’s IT labor market is more about quantity than quality at the moment, Do concludes that Vietnam’s top dev teams “are among the strongest in the world” and we couldn't agree more.
