[Photos] A Communal House in Son La Inspired by Indigenous Headscarves

Inspired by the headscarves worn by ethnic minority women in the area, the Son La Province structure appears to be drifting across the lush landscape on a pollen-sweet breeze.

The old growth forest occupying the border between Son La Province and Hoa Binh Province is known for its clear waters, clean air and gentle hills that ease into fertile rice fields. The five ethnic minority groups that live in the area — Kinh, Thai, Muong, Dao and Mong — traditionally gather in large communal buildings for a variety of functions. This adobe of bricks, bamboo and wood with a palm leaf roof, designed by Hanoi-based architecture team 1+1>2, meets these needs while aiming to boost interest and awareness of sustainable development and community tourism.
