Within 18 years, Vietnam’s airport industry aims to be one of the top four markets in ASEAN in terms of total passengers.
According to an aviation development plan that has just been approved by Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung, Vietnam hopes to have 15 domestic and 13 international airports functional by 2030, Zing reports.
The plan specifies that from now until 2020, the industry will focus on upgrading 21 current airports and kickstarting the first stage of airport construction in Long Thanh. Construction in Van Don, Phan Thiet, and Sapa will also begin. A total of 23 airports will be active by 2020.
It's also expected that by 2020, airports will service 131 million passengers and 2.2 million tons of goods per year with production capacity reaching 144 million passengers and 2.5 million annual tons of goods.
As for the general objectives, passenger transportation is expected to increase by 18% from 2015 to 2020, and 8% from 2020 to 2030. Goods transportation will likely increase by 16% between 2015 and 2020, and 12% between 2020 and 2030.
The development plan also mentioned that the government will focus on building logistics center in Noi Bai, Da Nang, and Tan Son Nhat airports.
