In the wake of a 40-degree heatwave, northern residents are flocking to Thanh Hoa province's Sam Son Beach by the thousands.

The 3.5-kilometer beach, located roughly 150 kilometers south of Hanoi, sees up to 70,000 visitors a day on weekends, constituting what VnExpress refers to as a “human tsunami”.

Though river sediment makes Sam Son's waves a reddish-brown, the water color hasn't stopped inland residents from converging on its shores. During the week, things quiet down a little as the beach only sees around 40,000 people a day, however this number is still well beyond the capacity of the surrounding town. Sam Son's 14,000 hotel rooms are fully booked for the rest of June while some hotels are also packed through July and August.
