A revised decree from the Ministry of Justice contains a proposal to fine members of a married couple that are found to be committing adultery.
Fines for the offense will set back the adulterous party between VND1-3 million. The fine also applies to single people who marry with the knowledge that their partner is still married to someone else. The proposal contains a VND10-20 million penalty for those “taking advantage of divorce to avoid asset responsibilities,” reports DTI News.
Some have criticized the adultery fines as being too low since many of those who engage in the act are rich and pointed to public shaming as a more effective option. One admitted adulterer told the online newspaper that he was not bothered by the fines, but would mortified if his family found out.
