Last week, a town in Quang Nam Province played host to an unusual spectacle: a cow beauty pageant.
Tuoi Tre reports that the contest, featuring ten of the finest bovines in the land, took place in Dai Hong Commune in the central province. The paper quoted Nguyen Hai Chan, a cow trader and member of the inaugural pageant’s 13-member jury, saying that the area has the best cows in all of Quang Nam since they are entirely grass-fed.
Oddly, the criteria for most beautiful cow appear to have focused on each animal’s sexual organs, with an emphasis placed on fertility. According to Tuoi Tre, this was judged “based on the criterion of the mammals having ‘ears shaped as jackfruit leaves and round, large buttocks’.”
Chan, meanwhile, got far more graphic, saying “I guess the first prize will go to the cows with robust reproductive features, including a large, round pelvis; numerous creases in reproductive organs; and five nipples.” The story does not say who had the enviable task of assessing these features.
The contest was ultimately won by the cow owned by a farmer named Le Dung. The cow is pregnant, and in a bold display that you certainly won’t see during the Miss America pageant, she defecated while being introduced to the jury, and again while receiving her crown. As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
