BackEat & Drink » Food Culture » [Video] Americans Try Bánh Mì for the First Time, Can't Stop Eating

Don’t watch this video when you’re hungry.

Apart from phở, Vietnam’s crunchy, savory street snack bánh mì has taken the world by storm. The simple but delicious dish has shown up in menus everywhere from Portland, the hipster capital of the US, to Singapore and even Paris.

Because of the sandwich’s ubiquity in Vietnam, it’s impossible to imagine a life without a quick bite of bánh mì on Saturday mornings with a sip of refreshing cà phê sữa đá. However, as viewers will find out a few seconds into this new video feature by BuzzFeed, there are folks who have never eaten bánh mì in their life. What?

The taste test-style video introduces these poor inexperienced human beings to bánh mì with five different fillings: Vietnamese cold cuts, grilled chicken, grilled pork, sardines and grilled steak. Participants will then score the sandwiches on a scale of one to five.

Their reception of the dish is largely positive, with the exception of the sardine option. To be fair, it’s neither the dish's nor their fault because who eats bánh mì with insipid white sardines? Saigoneers will be familiar with bánh mì and canned sardines in tomato sauce, which is tasty, by the way. But it’s bordering on offensive to subject the crunchy baguette to such an underwhelming filling.

Take a look at BuzzFeed’s video to see which of the four remaining proteins comes out on top:
