In a recent meeting on land use around and within the parameters of Tan Son Nhat International Airport, defense authorities shared that the military will stop lending out airport land for new projects.
On the morning of August 8, military officials and Saigon authorities organized a conference with relevant government agencies to review the current situation surrounding land use at Tan Son Nhat, reports Zing.
One of the most controversial issues concerning the aerodrome is the golf course that takes up a considerable portion of airport land. Regarding this, Deputy Minister of Defense Tran Don shared that the ministry has examined the situation and is ready to execute whatever the central government decides to do.
“In case the government and the Ministry of Transport decide to withdraw the area for construction of a runway, [we] can do that anytime,” Don said at the event. “The main concern here is how to make appropriate and reasonable compensation to the investors.”
Saigon Giai Phong reports that Don also emphasized that “the [defense] ministry will not sign new land lease contracts or set up joint ventures to exploit military land in [the] Tan Son Nhat Airport area and concentrate on re-planning.”
At the moment, as a short-term solution, he ordered the air force and Air Division 370 to collaborate with the People’s Committee of Tan Binh District to remove numerous structures located on airport land.
These include some 50 kiosks and three gas stations located at the corner of Truong Chinh and Cong Hoa Streets.
