Saigoneers need not be jealous of Da Nang’s free, city-wide WiFi network, as the southern hub will be getting its own WiFi coverage in the near future.
Vice chairman Tran Vinh Tuyen of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee announced the new service at a press conference on Tuesday, revealing that a Singaporean firm offered to fund the WiFi, reports Thanh Nien.
The network, intended for tourists and residents alike, will come online “in a few months’ time”, according to the newspaper.
“The project will be a great communication promotion that helps improve the city’s tourism,” Tuyen told the press, adding: “There will be two WiFi speeds, a normal one and a faster one in the city’s hotspots.”
Given Vietnam’s heavy internet use – the country ranks 18th worldwide in internet usage, according to the 2014 White Book on Vietnamese Information and Communication Technology – such a network would help to satisfy demand for those without mobile internet or those who don’t feel like burning through their data plan.
