Bus Driver Careens into Saigon Canal

Early yesterday morning, a bus careened off the road and into Saigon's Tau Hu Canal.

In the early hours of March 22, while driving down Vo Van Kiet Street from District 6 to District 1, the driver of a passenger bus went off track and careened straight into Tau Hu Canal, much to the horror of bystanders, reports Zing.

The bus, fortunately, was mostly empty, apart from the driver and an assistant. The site of the accident was just a stone’s throw from the No. 5 pedestrian overpass on Vo Van Kiet.

Quoc, an eyewitness, shared with the news source that he was cycling nearby when he heard a loud noise. The vehicle had already ploughed through the guardrails and was half-submerged by the time Quoc approached it. Nobody was injured, however, as both the pavement and motorbike lane were empty at the time.

“The water level was low then. The driver escaped through the main door, his body drenched in mud,” Quoc relayed to Zing. “The assistant was still on board, walking back and forth. Local residents tried to smash the windows to save the victims but he said that there was no one else in the vehicle.”

Both men on board the bus survived the accident. Currently District 6’s police department is investigating the cause of the crash. VnExpress quoted an eyewitness as saying the driver allegedly consumed some alcoholic drinks the night before, however this has not been confirmed.
