The city of Mirny is just like any other in the Republic of Yakutia. Except that it boasts a 525 meter deep, 1.2 kilometer wide hole.
A city standing next to what appears to be a pathway to the earth’s core is unlike anything we’ve ever seen.
The hole is a diamond mine which opened in 1955 and supplies a staggering 25% of the world’s supply of the precious gemstones.
Apparently, open-air options are no longer viable so mining is now done with these bad boys.
