The study complied by Akamai Technologies, Inc., which measures internet connection speeds in 136 countries across the globe, found that Vietnam ranked 99th overall and 11th in Asia, reports Tuoi Tre.
Though the performance leaves much to be desired, the numbers actually are an improvement.
Vietnam’s Internet speed in the last quarter of 2014 increased 5.6 percent from three preceding months, and 48 percent compared to Q4/2013, according to the report obtained by Tuoi Tre News.
The global average connection speed increased 0.7 percent quarter over quarter to 4.5 Mbps in the fourth quarter of last year, remaining above the 4 Mbps "broadband" threshold for the third consecutive quarter.
South Korea once again topped the global rankings in terms of average connection speed at 22.2 Mbps, followed by Hong Kong (16.8 Mbps) and Japan (15.2 Mbps).
However, the crown for peak connection speeds went to Hong Kong (87.7 Mbps), Singapore (84 Mbps) and South Korea (75.4 Mbps).
It’s unclear if constant breaks to Vietnam’s fragile internet cable factored into the results.
