IDPs will be valid for three years in countries that signed the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic in 1968, reports Tuoi Tre.

The IDPs, which allow holders to drive in 84 countries, will only be available to those who have permanent residence permits and driver’s licenses issued in Vietnam, Nguyen Van Quyen, deputy head of the Directorate for Roads of Vietnam (DRV), told the paper.

It's unclear if driver's licenses held by foreigners from countries that have signed the international treaty will still need a local license to drive in Vietnam. Last November, the DRV said that it would recognize licenses issued by foreign countriesrecognize licenses issued by foreign countries.

One can apply for the permit by contacting the DRV or their local transport department and submitting a valid driver’s license, passport and permanent residence card.

According to theUnited Nations Treaty Collection, Austria, Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, South Korea, Spain, the UK and Vietnam are among the countries that have ratified the treaty.
