According to a new report released by the National Assembly, Hanoi’s booming population has already surpassed the predicted figures for 2030.
In a recent report, it was announced that Hanoi’s population reached 9.6 million in 2017, which is the same number that was set as a target for the city thirteen years later, Dan Tri reports.
The body also estimated that the capital’s population would rise to 10.5 million by 2020, a figure that was previously proposed for 2050.
Hanoi has aimed to reduce population density in central districts. In Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh and Hai Ba Trung, however, the population rose from 966,806 inhabitants in 2013 to 1.13 million earlier this year.
“Overcrowding has left Hanoi unable to balance infrastructure growth with the demand, leading to other consequences to economic and social development,” the report concluded.
In 2017, authorities relocated 26,000 people from the Old Quarter to Long Bien District in an attempt to bring the density down to 500 people per square hectare. The neighborhood’s population density is currently nearly eight times that of New York City’s.
