Vietnam will play against South Korea in the inaugural AFF-EAFF Champions Trophy in March 2019.
The match, which was announced by the Korea Football Association’s Facebook page via a photo of South Korea's coach, Paulo Bento, and Vietnam's leader, Park Hang-seo, will take place in My Dinh Stadium on March 26, 2019.
Fox Sports recently reported that the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) and East Asian Football Federation (AEFF) have agreed that their respective champions will battle it out for a Champions Trophy, a match that will be held biannually.
Vietnam recently beat Malaysia in the final of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018 to win the spot against the South Koreans, who are the current EAFF E-1 Football Championship winners.
2018 has been an outstanding year for Vietnamese football. Under the guidance of coach Hang-seo, the national men’s team excelled at three regional tournaments. In January, Vietnam reached the final of the AFC U-23 Championship, beating much stronger contenders like Qatar and Iraq to become the first Southeast Asian team to make it that far. Unfortunately, the squad lost to Uzbekistan during an epic snow-covered final in China.
In August, the team also made the semi-finals of ASIAD 2018 in Jakarta, Indonesia, but lost to South Korea and eventually finished fourth.
Following Vietnam’s AFF Suzuki Cup 2018 win, V.League champions Hanoi FC also announced an upcoming collaboration with Germany’s Bayern Munich.
