In a recently released proposal, city officials suggest initial fares for Hanoi’s metro will be capped at a mere VND15,000 per ride.
According to VnExpress, the minimum fare will be just VND8,000, although daily travel tickets will also be available for VND30,000, while monthly tickets will cost VND200,000, with each ticket providing unlimited travel.
The proposal, however, claimed that while the low fares would apply when the metro begins operation, they would be increased at an unspecified later date.
Authorities made the decision to subsidize metro ticket fares after public opinion polls revealed people thought prices should not be too much higher than those for buses, the news source shares.
The metro has been undergoing testing since last September, and the Chinese construction company behind the long-delayed project has called for the train line to officially open next month.
When the route finally opens, ten trains will be used for daily transportation, each consisting of four carriages and capable of carrying up to 1,000 passengers. The cars are also equipped with two-way radios, enabling passengers to communicate with supervisors in times of emergency.
