Two decades after being approved for development, the Thu Thiem Peninsula is slowly taking shape as one of Saigon’s major future urban areas.
In a recent photo essay, VnExpress takes a closer look at the current progress of the District 2 satellite town. Thu Thiem used to be home to around 15,000 families who have slowly been relocated over the past 10 years to make room for future construction projects. When finished, the 657-hectare area will become the city’s largest financial and commercial center.
At the moment, the peninsula is connected to Binh Thanh District via the Thu Thiem 1 Bridge and to the city’s west side via the Thu Thiem Tunnel. The Thu Thiem 2 Bridge, which will connect the new town with downtown District 1, is being constructed, while just last year city authorities unveiled plans for a third bridge that will allow commuters from District 4 to visit the area via Ton Dan Street.
