HCMC Street to be Named in Honor of Gen. Vo Nguyen Giap

Like many other countries, Vietnam uses street names to honor fallen national heroes. As such, it should come as no surprise that both HCMC and Hanoi are planning to name streets after the recently deceased General Vo Nguyen Giap.

Nguyen Thanh Rum, director of HCMC’s Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, said that a list of potential streets had been put in front of city leaders who will make the final selection.

In addition to General Vo Nguyen Giap, officials plan to name a street after the late president Vo Chi Cong who died in 2011.

Sources told Tuoi Tre that the Hanoi Highway is the most likely choice for the General's moniker as it intersects with Dien Bien Phu street.

Hanoi is also expected to name a major street after Giap in the heart of the capital.
