The new statue of Ho Chi Minh has finally emerged from its blue cocoon in front of Saigon’s People’s Committee Building.

The 7.2 meter statue was officially inaugurated on Sunday just in time for the late President’s 125th birthday (which happens to be today), reports Thanh Nien.
A number of high-ranking officials joined the inaugural event where Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong commended the local government for launching the statue on schedule, adding that “the building of the statue is a symbol of the city people’s eternal love for the founding father,” wrote the paper.
Designed by Vietnamese painter and sculptor Lam Quang Noi, the statue sits on a 2.7 meter base, nearly double that of its predecessor which has since been moved to the HCMC Children’s House.
The old statue by Vietnamese sculptor Diep Minh Chau that depicts a seated Ho Chi Minh with a little girl stood on the site for 25 years.
The installation of the bronze-cast representation of Ho Chi Minh signals the end of the first phase for downtown Saigon’s pedestrian promenade.
