No matter how safe you are as a driver, accidents can still happen – even when you're standing still.
At around 10am last Thursday, a container truck crashed into traffic at a District 7 intersection, injuring two and leaving several other drivers pretty shaken, reports Zing.
A clip of the incident, captured by a nearby security camera, shows the massive vehicle careening into several motorbikes at a red light before hitting a four-seater car. Nguyen Thanh Tien, 22, was one of the drivers lucky enough to flee just seconds before the truck ran over his motorbike.
“The container truck suddenly came speeding toward me, at around 80-100kmph,” Tien told Dat Viet. “At first, I couldn't understand why the truck was coming toward me so quickly. Instinctively, I left my motorbike and ran onto the sidewalk. It happened so fast. If I had been just one second slower, maybe I would've been killed."
While Tien escaped the impending collision, others weren't so fortunate. Nguyen Van Hieu, 52, and his 13-year-old son were both injured as they fled.
“I panicked,” Hieu told Nguoi Lao Dong. “I yelled to my son to run, but there was no time. The truck flew off the road and crashed into a car. I rolled several times. It was painful but I forced myself to look for my son. He was underneath the four-seater car.”
Following the incident, both were rushed to hospital and are being treated for their injuries.
As for the truck driver, there are conflicting reports as to whether he was apprehended. According to Zing, the driver attempted to flee the scene following the accident but was stopped by witnesses, who later handed him over to the police. Thanh Nien, however, reports that he managed to get away and is now a wanted man.
Regardless, all reports suggest that the driver was on drugs. While this information is not confirmed, it would not be a stretch to imagine: last year, authorities blacklisted 381 truck, bus and taxi drivers from work after they tested positive for drugs, according to Thanh Nien.
Police are still investigating the incident at this time. You can watch the video below but be warned; it's fairly graphic.
