D7 Officials Uncover Source of Phu My Hung Stench

After years of living with an unpleasant stench, authorities have finally uncovered the source of Phu My Hung’s foul smell.

Last Thursday, HCMC Party Secretary Dinh La Thang confirmed that the stench wafting through District 7 comes from Da Phuoc landfill, a waste treatment site in Binh Chanh, reports VnExpress.

Thang’s comments were the result of an investigation launched last month after hundreds of residents complained about the stink, expressing concerns that their health might be affected by the foul air. According to Phu My Hung locals, the stench has existed for years but only recently became worse.

“Many people living here can’t stand the smell, and some have moved elsewhere because of it. Others have no choice but to endure it,” Ha, a local grocer, told VnExpress.

Locals say the smell is worst at night and has been exacerbated by rainy season. According to Tuoi Tre, the stench comes from a combination of underground garbage burial and wastewater.

The landfill, which opened in 2007, handles 5,000 tons of rubbish a day. District 7 authorities are working with Vietnam Waste Solution, the landfill’s owner, to change its waste management methods at the current site. There are also plans to move the Da Phuoc landfill to a site in Long An, 60 kilometers from the city.
