Yesterday morning, Saigoneers woke up to a water outage in parts of the city’s downtown districts.
While preparing for further construction of Saigon Metro Line 1, workers hit a water pipeline at the intersection of Le Loi and Pasteur Streets around 5am on Monday, bursting the pipe and causing a water outage, reports Tuoi Tre.
Water poured from the construction site across the intersection. According to water supply firm Sawaco, the pipe is over 50 years old and its age may have contributed to the break.
As a result, homes and businesses in parts of Districts 1, 2 and 3 experienced a water outage during the morning, however Sawaco had the problem resolved by the end of day.
In the coming years, the ground beneath Le Loi is set to undergo drastic changes. Earlier this month, municipal authorities closed off a section of the street along with Ben Thanh’s Quach Thi Trang Roundabout for the construction of a tunnel connecting the underground Ben Thanh and Opera House stations. The closure is expected to last until Line 1 begins operation in 2020.
