Saigon's Department of Culture and Sport has proposed the construction of a US$152 million stadium in District 2.
According to Tuoi Tre the stadium is part of the department's bid for the city to host the 2021 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. The biennial sports competition welcomes athletes from 11 countries in the region.
The agency has submitted its plan for the event to the Vietnam Sports Administration, the news source reports, before presenting the proposal to the central government.
The 50,000-seat stadium, if constructed, would be part of the Rach Chiec Sports Complex, a long-planned athletics facility along the Hanoi Highway in District 2.
In addition to the US$152 million required for the stadium, the city will need a further US$101 million to organize the SEA Games, according to Tuoi Tre.
If Saigon is chosen to host the games, preparation and spending for the event will be spread across several phases from 2016 to 2021, with funding coming from both the city budget and the private secor, the news source shares.
