Internet users in Vietnam will soon be able to enjoy the swift connection speed provided by FASTER, the speediest undersea internet cable in the world.
According to Dang Tung Son, deputy general director of CMC Telecom, a telecommunication infrastructure provider, Vietnam’s sixth undersea cable will be operational by the end of the year.
FASTER will have a bandwidth of 60 tetrabytes per second, 10 million times faster than typical cables of the same type, reports VietnamNet.
The main portion of the US$300 million cable runs 9,000 kilometers between the west coast of the United States and Japan and is the first undersea cable to span the Pacific Ocean.
The brainchild of Google and five Asian telecommunication firms — Global Transit (Malaysia), China Mobile International, China Telecom Global (China), KDDI (Japan) and SingTel (Singapore) — the cable was placed in a specific way so that it will avoid the ill effects of earthquakes and tsunamis.
The new cable was installed in hopes of providing a consistent alternative to existing cables, particularly the Asia-American Gateway, which has suffered a number of service interruptions over the years, crippling internet speed for those in Vietnam accessing international websites.
