On June 6, the northern city of Hai Phong will welcome a cable car line connecting Dong Bai Commune on Cat Hai island and Phu Long Commune on Cat Ba island.
Tuoi Tre reports that the route covers 3,955 meters of open sea and is part of Sun Group's planned Cat Ba cable car system, which is expected to eventually span 19.5 kilometers.
The line features 60 cars traveling at up to 8 m/s, each of which can carry 30 passengers. This means 4,500 visitors can be transported per hour. This will cut travel time compared to the ferry which currently connects the islands from 20 minutes to nine minutes.
On particularly busy days, the waiting time for the ferry can be up to three hours. Cat Hai Island, which features the ferry to Cat Ba, is connected to Hai Phong by a bridge. Cat Hai is also home to VinFast's motorbike and car factories.
As always, Sun Group is set on breaking its own records, with Tuoi Tre adding that the Cat Ba cable car's two supporting pillars are 214.8 meters tall, topping the record of their system in Ha Long City.
The Dong Bai Station resembles a fishing boat, echoing the role of the fishing industry in Hai Phong, while Phu Long's station portrays images of deep sea life and various marine creatures.
Ticket sales for the Cat Hai-Phu Long cable car line begins on June 6, with a 30% discount until June 30.
