Back Arts & Culture » [Photos] Japanese Artisan Creates Meticulous Animal Sculptures From Sugar Syrup

These handmade Japanese confections are almost too exquisite to eat.

Shinri Tezuka, the owner of a Tokyo candy shop called Ame-shin, is the creative mind behind these intricate sweet treats. Tezuka’s candies are crafted from a mixture of starch and sugar syrup and molded into small glass-like sculptures of animals such as a goldfish, octopuses, cranes and even a cuddly panda.

The craft is called amezaiku, a form of artisanal candy-making that started as early as the 8th century, when these translucent treats were given out at temples or given as gifts.
