A new traffic configuration tested at a flyover in Saigon's Tan Binh District on Monday failed miserably, with congestion becoming even worse than before.

Tuoi Tre reports that local officials and police implemented a new traffic pattern for the first time at the start of the week at the Hoang Hoa Tham flyover on Cong Hoa Street. Several busy streets including Hoang Van Thu, Thang Long and Tran Quoc Hoan converge at this flyover near Tan Son Nhat International Airport, and this area is chronically jammed with vehicles.

Under the system, traffic was changed to one-way on the flyover during morning and afternoon rush hour. However, things quickly went wrong at the start of the trial run, as traffic stretched for kilometers in an exceptionally bad jam.

Nearby streets that connect to Cong Hoa were also bumper-to-bumper, the news source shares.

Le Thanh Toan, who lives next to the flyover, told Tuoi Tre: "Traffic congestion has been a daily occurrence in this area, but the new traffic arrangement only makes matters worse. We are all unhappy [with the plan]."

At the moment there is no word on whether the trial traffic flow will continue in this trial pattern. Check out some pictures of the morning commute from hell below:
