After months of planning, Saigon is finally taking down the city’s collection of cement water towers.
Saigon’s war-era water towers were built in 1965-1969 all over the city. Depending on the size of the structure, these grey giants can store from 1,200 cubic meters to 8,500 cubic meters of water. However, as the city develops, they have grown obsolete amid city officials’ plan to move utility infrastructure underground.
Therefore, in March, 2016, Saigon decided that it was time these relics of a bygone era give up the ghost. Most recently, workers started taking down a water tower on Nguyen Van Dau Street in Binh Thanh District, reports Zing.
According to plans, six other similar structures will also be disassembled, including those on 3 Thang 2, Le Dai Hanh, Ho Van Hue, Hoang Dieu, Tran Hung Dao and Nguyen Thai Son streets.
