Back Stories » Saigon » Crocodile on the Loose Between Long An and Saigon: Officials

Authorities in Long An province have alerted the public of a crocodile on the loose.

The creature was discovered swimming near the province's Tan Tap Port on April 18 and is now believed to be plying the waters of the Soai Rap River, which runs between Long An and Saigon, reports Thanh Nien.

“According to witnesses, the crocodile weighs around 40-50 kilograms,” Chairman Nguyen Anh Dung of the Can Giuoc People's Committee told Thanh Nien. “It has probably escaped from a farm in other places because there is no crocodile farm in Can Giuoc.”

In order to avoid danger, authorities are encouraging local residents not to swim or wash clothes near the riverside.

But fear not: local officials are on the case. Chairman Dung informed the media that authorities were still hunting the creature with nets and electrocution guns. Thanh Nien writes: “Local authorities have proposed shooting it after police and fishermen failed to catch it with nets. However, the provincial authorities rejected the proposal, saying that it is unnecessary, and ordered relevant agencies to catch it alive.”

We're not sure who should be more afraid: Long An locals or the crocodile.
