“Driving stuffed together in a little Renault Dauphine from his uncle’s house to the dock, the artist and his immediate family, plus three relatives, fled on the last boat to leave Saigon on April 30, 1975 [...],” said the exhibition's press release.

The first exhibition in Saigon by Berlin-based artists Julia Ossko and Eugen Schulz is informed by their four-month stay in Vietnam, during which they searched for antique books and old photographs about Vietnamese culture and life. The collages on display are both new stories spurred from the collected objects as well as interpretations of the artistic influences that the artists experienced in the German art scene.

Part of a 20 hand-drawn series for the book ‘Sài Gòn Xưa’, this colourful and delicate map of old Saigon captures the joyfulness as well as the chaos of what was once the “Paris of the Orient.”

Alongside paying homage to old buildings and landmarks, Trong celebrates buildings that have been part of Saigoneses’ daily life, some for over a century.
