Following public outcry and criticism from street vendors, historians, artists and tourists, Saigon Post Office officials announced in January that they would repaint the iconic building after consulting experts, something they failed to do the first time around.
After getting approval from 14 members of the city's planning and architecture board, it looks like the repaint job is underway with the new hue a decidedly softer shade of yellow, reports Thanh Nien.
After the 123-year-old building was initially repainted a bright yellow last December, many criticized the color choice.
A local tour guide said at the time that nearly all the foreigners he guided to the post office “complained that the color hurt his or her eyes."
Souvenir seller, Nguyen Thi Thuy Loan had similar complaints:
"I can't stand this flashy color scheme. I get angry sitting here listening to tourists criticize it...the color makes it look more like a pagoda than a post office."
A post office official said the new paint job was sponsored by a local paint company so it wouldn’t have to foot the bill.
