Binh Thanh District’s Xuyen Tam Canal might get a makeover this year.

According to Tuoi Tre, the renovation will be carried out by Japanese investors. During a recent ten-day work trip by Saigon officials to Tokyo, Japan, a few local investors expressed interest in helping out with clearing the canal. These include Daiwa Housing, Mitsubishi, Fujita Engineering and Oriental Consulting Group.

The eight-kilometer-long Xuyen Tam Canal runs through Binh Thanh and Go Vap Districts. Its width ranges from 17 to 42 meters. Currently, the canal is one of the most polluted in the area as it handles approximately 40% of Binh Thanh’s household sewage, which amounts to 40,000 cubic meters of waste per day.

The newspaper also shared that this is not the first time city authorities have attempted to improve the canal: another VND123-billion project was proposed in 2002 but never actually got off the ground.

Dinh La Thang, the city's Party Chief and the lead delegate of the Tokyo trip, promised Japanese investors this time that the city will complete the site clearance phase within 15 months so that renovation work can begin as soon as possible.
